Answers in steps
Most step fields, like an email’s subject and body, a Slack message or a sheet column, can include the response itself. Click Insert variable and pick from the list; it appears as a pill in the text, and each run fills in that response’s value.
Answers
Section titled “Answers”Every question of the form is in the list, under Answers. Some offer more than the answer itself:
- Address: each part on its own (street, city, postal code, country and so on).
- Email that asks respondents to verify their address: whether it was Verified.
- Payment: a summary of the payment.
All answers puts in every question and answer, in form order; in an email it becomes a table. Hidden fields are left out, so it’s safe to send to the respondent. It’s available in message bodies: Email, Approval, Send back, Slack and Microsoft Teams.
About the response
Section titled “About the response”| Variable | What it gives |

The approval variables only appear in steps below an Approval.
A lookup table adds its value under Lookup tables, by its name, in the steps that come after it on every path.
In a workflow that starts on Form abandoned, there is no response number, revision or submit time yet. The list offers Form title, Response URL (the unfinished response under In progress) and Resume link, the link that reopens the respondent’s answers so they can finish. Send the resume link only to the respondent. See Recover unfinished responses.
When a question is removed
Section titled “When a question is removed”If you delete a question that a step uses, the pill shows Unknown field, and the workflow won’t publish until you remove or replace it. The workflow list marks it with Missing reference.
